What is a Turnbuckle?

A turnbuckle is a device for adjusting the length or tension of ropes, cables and other tensioning systems. It generally consists of two eye bolts at either end screwed into a metal frame. One eye bolt features a left-hand thread and the other features a right-hand thread. The tension is adjusted by rotating the frame, which causes both eye bolts to be tightened or loosened simultaneously, hence the name turnbuckle. Turnbuckles are mostly used in applications that require a lot of tension, such as suspension bridges and boxing rings. They can be made from galvanized or stainless steel, depending on the application.

Turnbuckle Precautions

Turnbuckles are made to regulate tension, which can potentially cause injury when used incorrectly. Before attempting to remove a turnbuckle from a rope or cable, it is important that the tension in the turnbuckle is relaxed entirely. This will create slack in the rope or cable and the turnbuckle can then be safely removed. It is important to note that if a turnbuckle is misshapen because of the tension it has been under, it must never be re-shaped by heat as this will cause the turnbuckle to become weaker and potentially break under tension. The best thing to do in this instance would be to discard the turnbuckle.
